--Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to learn salsa dancing/when will I get good?
It all depends on you and how much time, energy, and money you are prepared to put into your dancing. How many classes do you take during the week? Do you practice everyday, even if it is only five minutes? How many salsa cd’s do you own? Do you take any private lessons? Remember some of us will learn faster then others.

You don’t need to have any previous dance training to do salsa but if you have done any partner dance before it may help you. The two most important rules in salsa dancing are, building a very strong foundation and practice. Going out to dance salsa as often as you can and watching other salseros will help you visualize your dancing and eventually develop more understanding of the music and style. There are no secrets with salsa dancing the more you practice the better you get.

Do I need to bring a partner?
Definitely not, we always try to get even numbers of male and female students and rotate partners during the class, so you will benefit from dancing with different people.

What should I wear for the classes?
We will recommend you to wear something you feel comfortable in, from gym gear to casual attire. As for shoes, something that feels secure on your feet and will keep your heel and ankle in place is the best option. Sneakers will do for the first class but may cause difficulty with gripping when you begin turns and spins. Jandals or flip flops are not recommended.

Can I come and watch a class?
Yes you can come and watch for the first 5-10min of the class only, no one likes to be watched when learning and we respect the privacy of our students. Please contact us before you come.

How big are the classes?
We try to have a limit of 24 students per class, 12 males and 12 females. This way we can give our students as much time and attention as possible.

What is the age group in the classes?
We have students from 18 to 60.

How many weeks in a course?
The duration of the course is usually 8 weeks.

How long does each class go for?
Each class runs for approximately 60 minutes, with a short half time break.

I can’t make it to 1-2 classes what should I do?
You can catch up with a private lesson or by asking another student what was covered during the time you were absent, this is important as otherwise you may fall behind.

Can I pay as I go (casually)?
No, all the courses need to be paid in advance. This way we can guarantee there will be people for the duration of the course, by doing this we can monitor student’s progress and make sure everyone is learning at the same pace. Also you will get to know your class mates a lot better.

I have learnt salsa somewhere else what level should I join?
Because there is so many different salsa styles (Cuban, linear L.A., N.Y., on 1, on 2, and so on) as well as different teaching styles and methods, we recommend you attend a beginner’s class to assess your level.

Can I video tape the classes?
No, we don’t allow students to video tape the class or the teachers, although you can video yourself doing the move or step after the class.

Do I need to bring something, other then myself?
No, although we do recommend bringing a bottle of water and a towel on summer nights.

Is there any salsa clubs in Dunedin?
Yes, the Stock X Change bar holds salsa nights on Thursdays from 8:30pm

Where should I go to dance salsa?
There are several places to go salsa dancing in NZ and almost all the major cities in the world have amazing salsa clubs. These days, you can dance salsa anywhere on the planet!

What if I don’t have a partner to practice with?

There are always other students wanting to practice too, so ask around during the class, but remember all the basic techniques can be practiced on your own, so don’t let not having a partner be an excuse.

How do I join the classes?
Please contact us by phone or email and we will let you know times, levels, prices and location.
